Disability & Income Support
Applying for income support can be a long and frustrating process — especially when you're already dealing with a health crisis. This page explains Ontario's main disability and income programs, what they cover, and where our office can help when things stall.
ODSP
Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) provides monthly income support for people with disabilities who are in financial need. To qualify, your disability must be substantial, expected to last at least one year, and create a significant barrier to work. The full application process can take up to 12 months.
Ontario Works
Ontario Works provides temporary financial assistance to anyone in financial need, regardless of disability. Payment amounts are lower than ODSP. For many people, Ontario Works is the first step while they wait for an ODSP application to be processed — it ensures you have some support in the meantime.
Working & ODSP
You can work while receiving ODSP. A portion of your employment earnings is exempt, and the rest reduces your payment at a set percentage, but working generally means more total income than ODSP alone. The rules can be confusing, so it's worth understanding how your specific earnings would be treated before making changes.
Benefits & ODSP
Beyond the monthly cash amount, ODSP provides prescription drug coverage, basic dental, vision care, assistive devices, and other disability-related supports. These benefits can continue even if your income from employment reduces your monthly cash payment.
