Seniors' Services
Ontario has several programs designed to help seniors with prescription costs, income, property taxes, and housing — but they're spread across different ministries and application processes. This page brings them together in one place. If you or someone you're caring for needs help accessing any of these programs, our office is here.
Ontario Drug Benefit
If you're 65 or older, most prescription drugs on the provincial formulary are covered. You'll pay a $100 annual deductible and up to $6.11 per prescription. Lower-income seniors can have the deductible waived and the co-pay reduced to $2 per prescription — this is applied automatically based on your income tax filing.
Trillium Drug Program
If your household has high prescription costs relative to income — at any age, not just seniors — the Trillium Drug Program can help. It covers drugs on the Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary with a co-pay of $2 or less per prescription. You apply directly through the Ministry of Health.
Income Top-Up
The Guaranteed Annual Income System provides a tax-free monthly payment to low-income seniors who already receive federal Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement. The maximum is $87 per month for singles and $168 per month for couples. Enrollment is automatic if you file your taxes and receive OAS/GIS — there's no separate application.
Tax Grant
If you're 64 or older and own your home, you may qualify for up to $500 per year to help with property taxes. You apply through your annual tax return using Form ON-BEN. The amount is reduced based on income above $35,000 for singles or $45,000 for couples.
Public Transit Tax Credit
A 15% refundable tax credit on eligible Ontario transit costs — including PRESTO, TTC passes, and GO Transit — up to $3,000 in annual expenses for a maximum credit of $450. Claimed on your tax return.
Rent Supplements
The Strong Communities Rent Supplement Program provides rent-geared-to-income subsidies for low-to-moderate-income households, including seniors. Eligibility and waitlists vary by municipality. The Home and Vehicle Modification Program can also help cover the cost of accessibility modifications for seniors with mobility challenges.
These programs exist to help. Let us help you access them.
